Here, the electrolyte molecules consisting of lithium-ion as the cation and another negative ion dissociates. During this process, the lithium-ions move towards the cation and react to form lithium metal atoms by releasing electrons. These electrons travel from cathode to anode and react with the material from which the anode is made. Now, lithium ions are generated and released into the electrolyte to fulfill the gap.

On the other hand, during discharging, the load is connected to the electrodes instead of the power source. In this case, the electrons move from the anode to the cathode while the lithium ions in the electrolyte move towards the anode. It gets stored in the anode to fulfill the vacancy made during the charging process.
